The Philosophy of Raw Construction
When we set out to build the new CodingCup Labs website, we had a choice. We could follow the prevailing trends of modern SaaS—soft gradients, rounded corners, drop shadows so diffuse they look like ambient light, and copious amounts of negative space designed to feel “airy.”
Instead, we chose Neobrutalism.
Why? Because our visual identity needs to match our engineering reality. We don’t build soft, fluffy software. We build systems that are robust, high-performance, and structurally sound.
What is Neobrutalism?
In architecture, Brutalism (from the French béton brut, meaning “raw concrete”) was a movement characterized by massive, monolithic blocky appearances with a rigid geometric style and large-scale use of poured concrete. It didn’t hide its structural elements; it celebrated them.
In web design, Neobrutalism takes this philosophy and applies it to the digital realm:
- Hard Shadows: No gaussian blurs. Just solid blocks of offset color.
- Harsh Borders: Thick, unapologetic lines separating content.
- Clashing Colors: High contrast palettes that demand attention.
- Typography as Structure: Bold, oversized fonts that act as architectural elements.
Form Follows Function
Our engineering philosophy is simple: Performance First. Structural Integrity. Radical Transparency.
Neobrutalism visually represents this:
- Performance: By stripping away complex CSS effects (blurs, gradients), the site renders instantly.
- Integrity: The thick borders and rigid grids mimic the solid architecture we build in our backend systems.
- Transparency: Nothing is hidden behind “clean” abstractions. The mechanics of the UI are obvious.
Building the Tech Stack
To match the aesthetic, we needed a tech stack that was equally uncompromising. We chose Astro.
Astro allows us to ship zero JavaScript by default. The site you are reading right now is pure HTML and CSS, generated at build time. It’s blindingly fast, completely accessible, and brutally efficient.
We don’t need a massive React runtime to render a static blog post. We use the right tool for the job.
Welcome to CodingCup Labs. Let’s build something brutal.
